It’s amazing how many pickleball players believe the answer to this question is a resounding “YES!”—judging by how often they buy a new paddle every two or three months.
Buying a Ben Johns Joola paddle will not make you play like Ben Johns. The motivation behind most paddle upgrades is the belief that a new paddle will instantly make you a better player.
While a new paddle can improve performance, it’s not a magic fix. A premium paddle may slightly enhance an already solid skill set—but it won’t transform poor technique into great technique.
In most cases, the $80–$120 paddle you’re using will perform just as well as a $200–$350 paddle, despite what marketing claims about how it will “change your game.”
When Upgrading Your Paddle Makes Sense
A better paddle can help if:
- Your current paddle is worn out or damaged
- You need more control (carbon fiber face, grit, core thickness)
- You’re advancing from beginner to intermediate play
- You understand your play style (power vs control vs spin)
